  • Alton, Alresford and Winchester Railway started running on Monday 2nd October 1865 and after various legal shenanigans it was finally taken over by the London and Southampton Railway on 30th June 1884. LSR proposed from the start that all bridges were built for double tracking but eventually dropped this. They also initially proposed a line from Ropley to Meonstoke to meet up with a proposed line from Petersfield to Bishops Waltham but dropped this to allow the Alton, Alresford Winchester Railway.
