Extract from Black’s Hampshire Guide book for tourists 1879 the River Arle rises in Ropley Dean
This 1879 publication includes Alresford together with details of river Arle rising in Ropley dene [dean]. Mr Passingham writing in 1960’s mentions the canal construction getting to the Anchor (reason for it being called the anchor) construction started as far as the Chequers [reason for sign] recently with bad weather resulted in rather large quantity of water opposite the Ropley motor works. After the Anchor closed the basement flooded and had to be pumped out due rising springs and tanked.
