Newton Valence Enclosure Maps
Two maps made in 1849-1850 for the purpose of showing the enclosure of Newton Valence commons, One shows the whole parish as it stood then (part of which is Four Marks now) and the other, with triangulation measurements shows the area just south of Headmoor farm.
The enclosure of the commons of Newton Valence was one of the later in East Hampshire, its enclosure was predated by over 100 years by that of Farringdon in around 1747, and preceded by 140 years by Ropley in 1709.
Interesting to note are some of the lane names on the latter mentioned map- Mary Lane is called Common Road and ‘Kitcombe Lane’ is written as ‘Kicktam lane’- a clear mispelling. The maps are missing the awards or other associated documents on the archive.
