Methodist Church - letter from Henry Parrott, 27th Oct 1921
Letter handwritten on foolscap paper and dated October 27th 1921
An incident in connection with the extinction of the debt on Ropley Church has come to my
knowledge today which I think well worth recording. A niece of Miss A Read’s – Miss Read is
the person who did all the hard work in raising the money to pay off the debt – was married about three years ago and went to live in Canada. At her wedding a present of current Gold coins was made to her – at that time gold coins were very rare – she in accepting said “I shall keep these and only real need will induce me to part with them.” She knew the Aunt was working hard for the reduction of the debt on the church and as times are not good in Canada the young lady and her husband were unable to send on a donation out of their income so she sent on one of the Gold sovereigns she had received at her wedding- that is one of the actual coins – this I believe to be a piece of self sacrifice well worth permanent
record.
I think I also ought to record that Mr G Miller
husband of the Treasurer gave the challenge
offer of £25 if the £100 could be raised within the year it was a great joy to Mr Miller to hand
over the cheque for £25 thus freeing our beautiful
church from debt. I place these records
with the deeds.
